2020 Antwerp Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Winner

The Antwerp Chamber of Commerce would like to present our 2nd annual scholarship winner, Emily Wentland.  Emily attended Vantage Vocational Center for criminal justice and graduated this spring.  She is being awarded $500 towards her future education.

Emily Wentland, scholarhsip winner and Mike Schneider. Chamber of commerce member.

Emily is a very busy young lady.  She obtained outstanding grades while a student at Vantage garnering praise from her teachers for her excellent leadership skill and her positive attitude. She was a member of the National Technical Honor Society in which you must have a 3.5 GPA or higher, perfect attendance, no discipline problems and have passed all End of Course Exams. After that she wrote an essay, obtained 3 teacher recommendations and had to submit a resume to the committee of teachers and staff. Emily was then chosen as she represents the best of Vantage students.

Outside of the classroom, she was very active in 4-H representing Defiance County at The Ohio State Fair in 2019.  She did a tremendous job earning herself an Outstanding of the Day in Photography (top 20% of the class) in addition to earning multiple awards with her dogs.  Emily works diligently at training her dogs and has trained dogs for other people.

Emily works three days a week at a horse barn to work off her horse’s board. She cleans 14 stalls a day and feeds about 30 horses but her main hobby is dog training.    She has a goal to train them to qualify and compete at dog shows.

Emily has been accepted at Defiance College to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. After she graduates, she plans to attend the police academy and become a police officer.  She is especially interested in becoming a K9 officer.

The Chamber of Commerce scholarship is funded by the Cutie Pie contest that is held each year during Day in the Park.  Every bit of money that is raised by that contest goes to the scholarship fund.

We wish Emily all the best and who knows, perhaps someday we will see her back in Antwerp, dressed in police uniform with her trusted canine companion by her side.

Small Town Bliss Hair and Nail Studio

103 W. River St
Antwerp, Ohio 45813

(419) 258-3183

Besides shampoos, cuts and blow-outs they also do color, foils up to 3 colors, along with up-dos and formal styles for that special occasion and something called Creative Coloring. This is a coloring style with vibrant and lasting results.  Two types of creative coloring are Balayage and Ombre.  Balayage service is a highlighting technique that targets a smaller section of hair. A colorist paints bleach or hair color just on the surface of your hair freehand; he or she doesn’t saturate the entire section with hair dye. The result is soft, natural-looking, sun-kissed highlights that easily blend in as hair grows longer.   The Ombre is typically done with lightener being placed horizontally with full saturation of the section and then blended upward to diffuse the line.   Ombre is more of a horizontal placement while Balayage is more vertical.  Choosing which one is right for you really depends on the look you’re trying to achieve. Whether you’re looking for a blonde, brown, red, rose gold or even vivid color look, your artist should be able to work with you on either technique to create the color effect you’re looking for. Small Town Bliss also offers nail art which is incredibly popular and pedicures.

Divine Mercy Catholic Parish

303 Monroe St
Antwerp, OH 45813

419-399-2576

Antwerp is located in the northwest corner of Paulding County.  St. Mary parish was organized in 1864 and the first church was built in 1867.  It was constructed of wood, forty-six feet long and twenty-six feet wide.  This building remained in use until 1901 when the present church was constructed.  The first pastoral residence was built in the early 1870s and the present brick residence was finished in 1911.  A parish school was opened in 1915 but was discontinued in 1913 due to meager finances and the small number of children.  The school building today is used as the parish hall. The history of the parish and the history of the Wabash Canal are closely connected.  The canal brought Catholic families into the district of the Black Swamp: German, Irish and French.

This parish is one of the oldest parishes in Paulding County and the Mother parish of many of the surrounding churches which were started originally as missions of Antwerp, St. Mary.On July 1, 2008 St. Mary’s Parish, as well as the other parishes in the county were suppressed and Divine Mercy Catholic Parish of Paulding County was established.  This next chapter of our story is only now beginning to be written.
